UK envoy encourages Zelensky to be more flexible in peace talks
Zelensky confirmed that potential land swaps were part of discussions during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. Trump, in turn, indicated that an immediate ceasefire might not be required for a long-term peace settlement.
Speaking on Tuesday, Mandelson said that Zelensky could face domestic resistance if he returns to Kiev and tries to implement concessions. “He may go back to Kiev and find he doesn’t have the political support for the flexibility that he’s got to show in order to help bring this to an end,” Mandelson said, according to reports.
“We’ve got to continue making sure that what Zelensky can take back is cast-iron assurance, so that if he does show flexibility, Ukraine can be safe,” the diplomat added.
Trump also told reporters that Zelensky must “show some flexibility,” while reaffirming plans to arrange a Putin-Zelensky summit, potentially followed by a trilateral meeting including himself, Putin, and Zelensky.
Details of the guarantees that could be offered to Ukraine remain uncertain, as the US has ruled out full NATO membership, Russia has opposed the presence of Western troops on Ukrainian soil, and Moscow has demanded that military aid to Kiev be halted, according to reports.
