UK envoy states Zelensky must demonstrate ‘flexibility’
Zelensky confirmed that potential land swaps were discussed during his Washington meeting with US President Donald Trump, who indicated that an immediate ceasefire may not be required for a lasting settlement.
Speaking to Newsmax on Tuesday, Mandelson noted that Zelensky might face resistance from hardliners in Kiev. “He may go back to Kiev and find he doesn’t have the political support for the flexibility that he’s got to show in order to help bring this to an end,” he said.
The UK diplomat stressed the importance of providing Zelensky with firm assurances: “We’ve got to continue making sure that what Zelensky can take back is cast-iron assurance, so that if he does show flexibility, Ukraine can be safe.”
Trump has also urged Zelensky to demonstrate flexibility, while pushing to arrange a direct summit with Putin, potentially followed by a trilateral meeting including himself. The exact nature of the guarantees remains uncertain, as the US rules out full NATO membership and Russia opposes Western troops and continued weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
